Tag Taxonomy

One place to track every tag prefix used in the vault. Keep this list tight — add a new namespace only when the existing ones genuinely don't cover it.

Structural tags (no prefix)

Tag Where it goes
episode Every episode note
MOC Map-of-content notes
home The Home note
sop Standard operating procedures
reference Reference docs like this one
team Every team note
person Every person note
concept Every concept note
solid-verbal Show-level notes (MOCs, Home, etc.)

Namespaced tags

Prefix Example Use
team/ team/penn-state Applied to episodes (not team notes). Lets you filter episodes by team without parsing wikilinks.
person/ person/matt-brown Applied to episodes that feature or meaningfully discuss this person.
conference/ conference/big-ten Applied to episodes and team notes.
topic/ topic/coaching-hot-seat Thematic topics discussed. 2–5 per episode.
segment/ segment/wiggum-scale Recurring show segments invoked in the episode.

Slug rules

  • Lowercase
  • Hyphens, not underscores or spaces
  • Drop "the" (secret-garbage-bracket not the-secret-garbage-bracket)
  • Use short, stable team slugs: penn-state, ole-miss, texas-am, byu, usc
  • Conference slugs use the short form: big-ten, big-12, sec, acc, pac-12, aac, mac, sun-belt, mwc, cusa, independent

What NOT to tag

  • Don't tag every coach/player mentioned in passing — only ones the episode meaningfully discusses. Wikilinks handle passing mentions.
  • Don't tag generic topics like football or college-football — the entire vault is that.
  • Don't create one-off topic tags that won't recur. If a tag is only ever used once, it's a bad tag.

Existing inconsistencies to normalize (as of 2026-04-17)

  • Big-Ten vs Big Ten — standardize to Big Ten in conference: frontmatter fields; big-ten in tags.
  • Team notes have bare penn-state tags — migrate to team/penn-state.
  • Team notes have bare team tag — keep.
  • Concept-related tagging on episodes is inconsistent — add segment/wiggum-scale on every Wiggum episode, etc.
