Bill Connelly's framing — introduced on 2026-04-30 — for understanding the structural shape of college football conferences via SP+ distribution. A vertical conference has the top three teams in the country plus a notably weaker bottom (Big Ten 2026). A horizontal conference has a giant strong middle but no clear top three (SEC 2026).

The frame has a structural consequence: vertical conferences are likelier to produce a playoff winner but produce fewer compelling week-to-week games. Horizontal conferences are dynamite to follow week-to-week but might not have a team capable of winning three or four playoff games.

The show adopted the frame on first articulation. Bill's specific 2026 SP+ data: SEC has the 4-6-9-10-11-12-15-16-19-20 teams in projections; Big Ten has the top three. The SEC's worst team was ahead of seven Big Ten teams in last year's SP+. Half of SEC games last year were one-score.

The frame extends naturally to lower-tier conferences too. Big 12 and ACC are described by Bill as having "one known heavyweight" with a long satellite-orbit tail of unknowns — closer to horizontal but with a thinner top. The Mountain West's structure post-Pac-12-realignment is currently illegible; Bill expects to have to re-classify it during the season.
