The show still treats Ohio State as a likely playoff team and one of the sport's most talented rosters, but the 2026 read has more visible downside than a normal Buckeye year. The concern is cumulative: a schedule with Texas, Indiana, Oregon, Iowa, USC, and Michigan leaves less margin for new coordinator transitions, front-seven defensive replacement, and Julian Sayin's expanded offensive role.

The May posture is "do not bet on the miss, but respect the path." Ohio State can still land at 11-1 or 12-0 if the Arthur Smith run-game adjustment works and Matt Patricia reloads the defense, yet the show thinks this is the most plausible recent Ohio State season for a playoff-miss conversation.

The show has also put the Ryan Day "born on third base" narrative to bed. Day inherited a loaded program, but the national title, sustained top-tier relevance, staff repairs, and six-plus years of post-Urban Meyer maintenance make pure stewardship a bad explanation for the whole Ohio State era.
