The defense ("just take the best player") concedes the principle but ignores the opportunity cost of using a top-3 pick on a "borderline meaningless position." If you have $50M guaranteed to spend on RB, trade for Breece Hall with a 2nd. Will Anderson just signed for $50M/year because he plays a position that wins NFL games — that's the comparison.
