Context
The Sark Tank pitch sells Gary Patterson as the veteran defensive mind who can solve USC's identity crisis. The show likes Patterson and respects the hire, but both Sarks invest only around 15%.
The reason is structural. D'Anton Lynn had already started moving USC toward a better defensive identity before leaving, and Patterson now inherits a roster that may not have the depth, size, or multi-year recruiting stack needed for the Big Ten schedule in front of it. Oregon, Washington, Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, and a range of offensive styles create a stress test that one advisor cannot erase.
This reinforces USC's existing vault posture: the Trojans can be better than their record, but the defensive fix has to survive schedule geometry and roster math, not just produce better vibes.
