Richard agrees with the spirit but adds the important qualifier: the weirdness is still there, but viewers now have to find it because windows, paywalls, and platform fragmentation make it less likely to stumble into a strange Big 12, ACC, Mountain West, American, or new-Pac-12 game by accident.
Ty's examples make the point wider than hipster taste. Texas Tech can buy its way into national relevance, Miami can threaten a title, two G6 teams made the playoff, North Dakota State has new-conference intrigue, and Sacramento State may become its own absurd sports-city case. The soul of the sport is not gone; the discovery mechanism is worse.
