Stanford looked boringly competent but not fixed.

Dan Rubenstein

“For long stretches in this game on both sides of the ball appeared to be boringly competent.”

Context

Stanford beat Hawaii 37–27 after leading most of the game and then needing a late response. Davis Warren threw for a career-high 310 yards, the offense found several useful receiving moments, and the defense got stops in a way that has not been routine for the Cardinal.

That is real progress, especially after losing to Hawaii last year, but it does not erase the longer pass-defense and roster-turnover questions. Stanford's act is closer than it was; the season still has to show whether this competence travels.
