Portal QB Supply / Demand Mismatch

The 2026 cycle's structural observation — named explicitly on the 2026-05-05 May Q&A — that the supply of playoff-caliber portal QBs is much thinner than the demand for them. The portal-QB conversation in the modern game has assumed a deep market available to anyone willing to spend, but the actual top-tier supply tops out at three or four names per cycle. After that, it's speculative.

Current Show Posture

As of 2026-05-05:

The 2026 supply, in show order: Sam Leavitt (injured), Brendan Sorsby (now in question), Drew Mestemaker — and discounting Darian Mensah who didn't enter the portal at all. Per 247, DJ Lagway is QB4, but the show is not sold he's at playoff-QB consistency yet. After that, the names get speculative quickly: Husan Longstreet, Deuce Knight, Byrum Brown, Rocco Becht, Beau Pribula, Aidan Chiles, Kenny Minchey. None plug-in playoff guys.

The implication is that "we'll just go get a great portal QB" is no longer a viable strategy at the top end. Programs that need a portal QB to be playoff-caliber are competing in a thin market where any of the top three can disappear (injury, gambling investigation, etc.) and there's no second line of defense. The Texas Tech / Sorsby situation is the canonical 2026 case.

The frame pairs with two adjacent ideas: Lane Kiffin's QB insurance policy pattern (stack low-cost depth as a hedge) and the show's scouting-specialist investment thesis (find your QB before they're in the portal).

Recurring Frames Within the Concept

  • The top-three drop-off — the empirical pattern: top three are real, then the names get speculative.
  • Need-vs-want at the position — programs that need a portal QB are exposed; programs that already have one and are just stacking depth are not.
  • The injury/legal exposure problem — at the top end, even the available portal QBs come with material risk.
